Building the Workforce Powering the Future of Microelectronics
Developing the next generation of microelectronics talent isn't the responsibility of any one organization. It requires educators, industry, workforce organizations, government and community partners working together.
NEMC brings these groups together to strengthen the workforce pipeline from classroom awareness through career placement, helping ensure the Northeast has the talent needed to support continued innovation and advanced manufacturing.
Inspire Future Talent
Building awareness early is essential to attracting more students into microelectronics careers.
Programs:
Makers of a Better Future
NEMC and MassTech’s flexible and no-cost awareness curriculum overlay introduces high school students and young adult learners to cutting-edge technologies like microelectronics and photonics, exploring their real-world applications and exciting career paths. Already reaching thousands across the region, the lessons are Common Core- and WIDA-aligned and include differentiation strategies for diverse learners. Up to 12 hours of curriculum is available for free to K-12 and adult educators by applying at the link below.
SparkEd
Spark Photonics Foundation’s SparkEd professional development program equips educators to bring hands-on learning in photonics, semiconductors and microelectronics into their classrooms. Participants receive classroom-ready resources, ongoing support through a Community of Practice and connections to NEMC member companies that help students explore real-world technologies and career pathways. Educators can also explore SparkBeta, a project-based curriculum that introduces students to coding and photonic chip design.
Develop Technical Skills
Students need opportunities to apply what they've learned through hands-on experiences.
Programs:
Northeast Microelectronics Summer Internship Program (MIT)
NEMC is a proud sponsor and supporter of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Northeast Microelectronics Summer Internship Program (NMIP), which connects first-year and sophomore college students with paid internships at leading microelectronics companies across the Northeast. By introducing students to the industry early in their academic careers, the program helps build long-term interest in microelectronics while exposing participants to the region's broader innovation ecosystem through company visits, networking and hands-on industry experiences.
Embedded Capture the Flag (MITRE)
MITRE's Embedded Capture the Flag (eCTF) is a hands-on cybersecurity competition that introduces students to the challenges of securing embedded systems and microelectronics. Through a project-based design, build and attack competition, participants develop practical skills in hardware security, secure system design, and problem-solving while gaining exposure to one of the fastest-growing disciplines in microelectronics. The competition is open to high school, community college, undergraduate and graduate students.
Connect Talent to Careers
Preparing people for careers is only half the challenge. Connecting them to employers is equally important.
Programs:
Edge4Vets
Edge4Vets helps transitioning military veterans prepare for civilian careers through its "Prep and Connect" program, which teaches participants how to translate military experience into employer-ready skills while connecting them directly with hiring managers and HR professionals. For NEMC member companies, the program offers early access to highly skilled, mission-driven talent and meaningful opportunities for HR and recruiting teams to mentor veterans and support their transition into civilian careers. Since its launch, Edge4Vets has helped more than 3,000 veterans across nine states, with up to eight in 10 participants successfully connecting to employment opportunities.
Invest in New Workforce Solutions
NEMC also invests directly in new workforce initiatives through the POWER Program.
